Our Church History


The history of SWBC is understood to have begun in the mid-fifteenth century; but on its present site in the year 1774. In June of that year, 4 cottages and an orchard were purchased by a Miss Elizabeth Fuller of Saffron Walden. The plot was at the junction of Cucking Stool End and Bailey's Lane, as marked in red on the image below.
In the same year the Georgian Chapel was build on the plot of ground and opened for worship in the November. The building is still in use today.
The main chapel in use today was built in 1879 over the graveyard shown in the picture above. It cost £4000. A major renovation of the building was completed in November 2003.
